The Family of Major William Slade and Emily Alice Vincent

Although it was the first marriage for William, Emily Alice already had 4 children with Alfred Ernest Buzzard: Millar, Vera, Marjorie and Alys. Together they were to have 3 more children, William Slade Jnr., Barbara and Joan Vincent.

Soon after the marriage of his mother, Millar went on a cruise from England to Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, with his grandfather Charles Gibson Millar. They sailed on 3rd December 1898 onboard the “Scot” together with Charles Gibson’s doctor, Dr. Scarth, and his valet Mr. Bush. In taking his doctor, Charles Gibson suffered from ill-health at the time.

After the wedding of his mother in August 1898, Millar was admitted, as a boarder, to King’s School Chester, enrolling in Form IIA in May 1899. His family address was listed as 22 Mount Park Crs., Ealing, London. He remained at the school until December 1901. [70]

The UK census records 31st March 1901, lists Millar, at 14 years of age, staying as a visitor at the Mostyn Hotel, at the seaside in Flint, Wales, only 23 miles from his school in Chester. [73] We can assume that he was there on holiday by the seaside, possibly with a friend’s family from King’s School. His place of birth was recorded as Australia, Melbourne.
